How Much Does SEO Cost in New Zealand in 2026?

/The short answer, and why it is not the whole answer

Most reputable NZ SEO engagements sit between roughly NZ$1,500 and NZ$5,000 per month for small to mid-sized businesses, with larger, more competitive programs running higher. Project-based work such as technical audits, site migrations or one-off content builds is typically quoted separately. Those ranges are indicative, not universal. Two businesses in the same category can pay very different fees for very different reasons, and the price alone tells you almost nothing about whether the work is any good.

/Why NZ SEO pricing varies so much

SEO is not a commodity. The cost of a program is driven by the current state of your site, the competitiveness of your category, your goals, the geographic scope, the amount of content and authority-building required, and the quality of the provider. A cheap local plumber in a low-competition suburb will cost a fraction of a national ecommerce brand competing across Australasia. A brand new website with no content and no backlinks needs a very different program to an established site with strong existing authority.

/Common NZ SEO pricing structures

There are broadly four ways NZ SEO is priced. Monthly retainers cover ongoing programs across strategy, technical, content, on-page and authority work. Project fees cover one-off deliverables such as an audit, a migration, a keyword strategy or a batch of pages. Hourly rates are used mostly by consultants and specialist advisors. Performance-based pricing, where fees are tied to rankings or traffic, is rare in NZ and worth approaching carefully because rankings can be gamed and traffic can be junk if it is not qualified.

/Monthly retainers

Retainers are the most common structure for NZ SMEs that want ongoing SEO. Entry-level local retainers for a single-location service business typically run from around NZ$1,500 to NZ$2,500 per month. National or multi-location programs often sit between NZ$3,000 and NZ$6,000. Competitive commercial and ecommerce programs regularly exceed NZ$6,000 monthly once serious content, digital PR and technical work is included. A retainer should always be tied to a written scope, not a vague promise of activity.

/Project SEO

One-off projects are a sensible way to start if you are not sure whether you need a long-term retainer. Common projects include a full SEO audit (technical, content and off-page), a keyword and topical strategy, a site migration plan, a Core Web Vitals or performance sprint, an internal linking overhaul, or a content build for a specific service or region. Fees typically range from around NZ$1,500 for a focused audit to NZ$10,000 or more for a full migration program on a larger site.

/Technical SEO

Technical SEO is the foundation everything else sits on. Crawlability, indexation, canonicals, schema, sitemap health, Core Web Vitals, mobile experience, JavaScript rendering and internal linking all fall in this bucket. On a healthy site, technical maintenance is a small share of a retainer. On a broken site, a technical fix-up sprint before ongoing SEO begins is usually money well spent, and often the difference between a program that compounds and one that never gets moving.

/Local SEO

Local SEO covers Google Business Profile optimisation, NAP consistency, review generation, local content, location pages and citations in the NZ directories that actually matter. For a service business in one or two suburbs, this can be handled inside a modest retainer. For a business genuinely serving multiple regions, expect the local SEO share of the program to grow with the number of legitimate service areas you cover.

/Content

Content is usually the largest ongoing cost inside a NZ SEO retainer, because it is the largest ongoing input into rankings, topical authority and, increasingly, AEO citations. Expect anything from a few hundred dollars for a short supporting page up to NZ$1,500 or more for a well-researched pillar article with real NZ context and internal linking. The important question is not price per word, it is whether the content is genuinely useful, factually accurate and structured in a way both people and language models can extract.

/Authority and link earning

Third-party mentions still move the needle for SEO and now also feed AEO. Legitimate authority building through digital PR, partnerships, industry citations and unlinked mention capture is skilled work and priced accordingly. Cheap paid link networks are the classic false economy. They are also increasingly risky given how well Google now filters them.

/AEO

As of 2026 most serious NZ SEO retainers include an Answer Engine Optimisation component. Entity work, schema, answer-first content structure, brand authority signals and monitoring for AI citations are all part of the modern job. If your provider cannot describe how they think about AEO alongside SEO, that is a signal to keep looking. For a fuller picture, see our guides on AEO in New Zealand and SEO vs AEO vs GEO.

/Reporting

Reporting is usually included in a retainer and should focus on outcomes, not vanity metrics. Rankings alone are not enough. Look for reports that connect keyword visibility, qualified traffic, landing page performance, conversion behaviour and business outcomes such as enquiries or bookings. Ask what channels beyond organic are being tracked and how the SEO work is being attributed.

/What actually changes the cost

Category competitiveness, geographic scope, the number of services or products, the current condition of the site, the ambition of the goals, and the quality of the provider all move the number. Two providers quoting NZ$2,000 per month can offer wildly different programs. The right way to compare is to compare scope, deliverables, reporting and access to senior strategists, not the headline monthly fee.

/Cheap SEO, and why it usually costs more in the long run

The NZ market is full of NZ$300 to NZ$700 per month SEO offers. Some are honest lightweight monitoring services. Many are template-driven programs that publish thin content, spray low-quality directory links and produce cookie-cutter reports. They rarely move rankings on anything competitive, and the damage they can do to a site through poor on-page changes or spammy backlinks is often more expensive to reverse than paying for a decent program from the start.

/Questions to ask before you sign

Ask for the exact scope of work each month. Ask which strategist will actually own the program, not just which account manager will send the report. Ask to see two or three examples of comparable NZ work. Ask how they measure results, not just rankings. Ask what happens to your content, links and access if you leave. Ask how they think about AEO. If any answer is vague or defensive, you have your signal.

/Where to start

If you are trying to work out the right SEO investment for your business, start with a scoped audit rather than a long retainer. It gives you a clear picture of what your site actually needs, and it lets you evaluate a provider on real work before you commit. Book a strategy call with The Digital Hive and we will help you shape a realistic 12 to 24 month program that suits your business, your market and your budget.
