The Real Cost of a Website Over Five Years: A NZ Ownership Guide

/The build price is the first number, not the whole number

Most NZ businesses compare website proposals on the one-off build price. That makes sense, because it is the largest single invoice. But a website is a working business asset that has to be hosted, secured, updated, improved and eventually redesigned. If you only compare the build line, you can end up choosing the offer that costs more across the life of the site.

/The five cost layers of owning a website

A practical way to plan is to separate costs into five layers. First, the design and build. Second, hosting, domains and email. Third, maintenance such as software updates, backups, security monitoring and small fixes. Fourth, growth work such as SEO, AEO, content and advertising. Fifth, the redesign that most business websites need every few years as design standards, devices and customer expectations change. Each layer should appear somewhere in your budget, even if some of it is handled in-house.

/Hosting and maintenance are where quotes differ most

Two proposals with a similar build price can carry very different ongoing costs. One might bundle managed hosting, updates and backups into a monthly plan. Another might leave hosting to you and charge hourly for every update. Ask each provider to state, in writing, what their hosting or support plan includes, how often software is updated, how backups work, and what response times apply. Hosting alone should never be assumed to mean unlimited changes.

/Plan for the redesign before you need it

The redesign is the cost most businesses forget. Websites tend to age visually and technically over a few years, even when the content is still accurate. If you budget for a refresh from the start, it becomes a planned investment rather than an unexpected bill. Some agencies, including The Digital Hive through our Website for Life programme, include a like-for-like redesign every three years for sites that stay on qualifying managed hosting, with expanded scope and third-party costs quoted separately.

/How to compare offers on total value

Build a simple five-year view for each proposal. Add the build price, five years of hosting and support, any known licence or plugin renewals, and the expected cost of one redesign. Then compare the totals alongside what each provider actually delivers: page count, custom design, functionality, content work, revisions and launch support. The lowest build price is not always the lowest five-year cost, and the lowest five-year cost is only good value if the scope is genuinely comparable.

/Questions to ask before you sign

What is included in the build, and what is excluded? What does hosting include, and what happens if I move hosting elsewhere? Who owns the domain and the final deliverables once invoices are paid? How are variations quoted? What happens to my site and data if we stop working together? Clear answers to these questions protect you far more than a small difference in the headline price.

/Where the 5% Price Beat Guarantee fits

From 28 October 2026 to 31 December 2026, The Digital Hive is running a 5% Price Beat Guarantee on eligible comparable website builds. If you hold a genuine written quote from an independent NZ professional website agency, we review it like for like and, where it qualifies, our written offer is at least 5% below the comparable build component, excluding GST. Hosting, SEO and ongoing services are excluded from that comparison, which is exactly why a total cost view still matters.

/The short version

Budget for the whole life of your website, not just the launch. Ask every provider for clear written scope on build, hosting, support and redesign. Compare proposals over five years. Then choose the partner whose scope, process and ongoing commitments give you the most confidence, not simply the smallest first invoice.

Let's build your
unfair advantage.
